healthcare
Many healthcare providers are not prepared to care for the unique needs of their trans* clients. As such, trans* individuals may have to educate their healthcare providers about their own healthcare needs or what transgender is. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that half of their over 6000 trans* respondents reported having to teach their doctors about their own healthcare (Grant et al., 2011).
Seeing a healthcare provider requires trans* people to come out to a stranger. This puts them at risk for abuse, mistreatment, and/or disrespect by their healthcare providers.
Some trans* individuals have been denied healthcare and/or health insurance due to their gender identity.
Trans* people whose parents are against their transition may be taken off their parent's health insurance in an attempt to stop the process.
Very few health insurance companies offer policies which cover transition-related healthcare treatments and procedures.
Some transgender people may suffer greater mental/emotional distress due to the lack of healthcare resources and social support available to them.
Healthcare professionals who are qualified for performing many of the transition-related procedures are difficult to locate (i.e. they may not outright advertise their transition-related services). There are also a limited number of these professionals.
