financial security
The National Transgender Discrimination Survey collected data from over 6000 trans* individuals in the U.S. The results of this survey indicated that financial security was a major issue for the trans* community:
- extremely high rates of poverty; rate of respondents with an income of $10,000 per year or less was 4 times more than the general population
- unemployment rate was double that of the general population
- 90% were mistreated at work or hid their gender identity to avoid mistreatment
- almost half had faced discrimination at work (such as being fired or denied promotion) due to being trans*
- 16% were forced to pursue illegal occupations like sex work and drug dealing due to inability to find legal employment
